Threatened Plants in Hunua Ranges

A recent survey of the Hunua Ranges found over 50 records of threatened plants.

These records comprised three different species. Unfortunately another two species previously recorded within the park were not found, possibly due to historic habitat loss.

These plants are all at risk from introduced mammals such as possums, pigs and goats so it is hoped the ongoing pest control programs will allow these populations to flourish.

A separate study looking into the genetics of Orchids has found that Hunua has a genetically unique species. This is the second species of plant that Hunua can claim as its own, the first one is a tiny succulent herb commonly known as a stonecrop that thrives in moist areas with plenty of light.

The details of the threatened plants and their locations is being kept under wraps to reduce the risk of plant collectors exploiting the finds. But the knowledge that these rare plants are surviving in the Ranges is a great reminder about how important it is to keep carrying out pest control.
