Tree Planting for 2017

Tree Planting - Trudy plants

As the temperatures reduce and we contemplate the short days winter has to offer, you are no doubt feeling warm and fuzzy in the knowledge that this marks the start of the tree planting season! Yes, once again our friends at Auckland Council Southern Parks have set a schedule of tree planting days for us to experience one of the most rewarding volunteer activities you and your whole family can get involved in.

Here is the information you need, also available on our website.

  • Sunday 21st May – Whakatiwai
  • Sunday 28th May – Waitawa Regional Park
  • Sunday 11th June – Whakatiwai
  • Sunday 24th June – Duder - it's been a few years since we had a planting at Duder and those were on pretty steep hillsides. We are now extending existing plantings into paddocks so easy terrain.
  • Sunday 9th July – this is a potential Mop Up day, could be Waitawa, more likely Duder. Or maybe neither. Ranger Mags will confirm nearer the time.

Coordinator and Southern Parks contact for tree planting activities is Ranger Mags Ramsey ph: 021 489046 or email mags.ramsey@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz (she can add you to her volunteer mailing list)

All plantings start at 10 am with a sausage sizzle provided at lunchtime.

Previous experience is not necessary and park rangers will be on site to show you how to give the trees the best chance of survival. There are tasks to accommodate all ages and levels of fitness.
Please bring your own:

  • drink
  • spade (if possible) and gloves
  • sturdy footwear (jandals are not suitable)
  • a raincoat and warm clothing - dress for our wonderfully unpredictable Auckland weather
  • sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses (let's be positive eh?!)

So we look forward to seeing you there - please do try and give Ranger Nic an indication of your intentions to attend and we encourage you to pass this information on to any friends or family you think might also like that warm fuzzy feeling of contributing to their city and giving back to Planet Earth.
